A recent post at Daniel's Random Mutterings (DRM - how clever) explains exactly how to do this with open source tools. Using a Djano CMS system, FFMpeg for the FLV encoding, FLVtools2 for writing meta information, and FlowPlayer for embedding the SWF file you'll have everything you need to get started. The code is pretty straight forward and a great starting point. Now go forth and create your new video distribution empire.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Flash from the Brawney Man

Filed under: Ad Design, Rich Internet Applications, Video, Links
Our sister site, Ad-Jab, blogged about this site yesterday. Brawney Academy is an advertising site for Georgia Pacific's Brawney Paper Towels. Under the auspices of a reality show, our host, "Brawney Man," leads eight manly men through some sort of outdoor sensitivity training. Only the first of what looks to be eight video episodes has been posted so far, but lots of other stuff to do on the site including your own training in manly sensitivity. If you work at it, you too could attain the Brawney Academy goal by becoming "[d]ependable and strong, but caring"...and thus, like the Brawney Man himself, "a literal human representation of the paper towel's qualities."

Not too sure about the whole reality series concept, but I like the site design. The combination of photo-realistic elements and retro graphics is worthy of a Disney Imagineer.

[via Ad-Jab]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Giving Flash a whole new dimension...

Filed under: Ad Design, Video, Samples
...so to speak...

To see what I'm talking about, try out the Philips Bodygroom at shaveeverywhere.com. As Ihave said in this space before, contentproviders need only create Flash based video content to distribute their stuff to viewers and then they can grab thelargest online viewing audience of any video app. Larger than Windows Media Player, larger than Quicktime, larger thanall other video types.

ABC has created and released a new Flash based video player for four of its shows that embeds video withnon-skippable ad content from AT&T. Users can choose from four differenct shows (Desperate Housewives, Lost,Commander and Chief, and Alias) and view content in each with sponsor advertisments within.

Screenshots and more after the jump.

In each segment of the show the viewer can skip to any point before the ad. This forces the user to viewyour sponsor's content. Plus most users don't mind having to deal with a few ads to get better access to better contentin more places.

The Player also lets viewer choose between all available shows while viewing the current show. This way you canchoose what you want to see without having to leave your current choice. Plus short show descriptions are included soyou don't have to leap before you look. Apparently all of the current season of Alias is available for work dayviewing.

Shows are in wide screen format and use the high quality view codec from On2. Since shows are broken up into piecessurrounding ads, load times should be minimal.

While watching a show the user can also click on the faded show titles surrounding the video and skip to thatshow's current video.

Now if the other content providers would wake up and do the same thing life would be easier (I'm yelling at you AP,MTV, Comedy Central, etc).

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

You Tube gets a player upgrade

Filed under: Releases, Ideas, Video, Flash Player 8

Friday You Tube released a new player face for its video. They are incouraging users to check out the newplayer and tell them what they think. I like the player more than the older one, but its not as 'pretty.' You Tubeadded needed features including a scroller that can be easily selected and moved to jump through the playing video, avolume control, and a time stamp. Improvements I would like to see include the release of an API so developers canembed You videos in their projects and even adjust the player to add of remove functionality. Plus I would like to skinthe player with various colors and designs. They could even use an API to promote the site to content providers fortargetted use on sites. Maybe E! could start embedding E! content with custom skins and active dynamic Flashcontent.

In January, Scott Kurtz started a new animatedventure called PVP Alive. The short Flash-based animations were meant to bring PVP into a fully animated funny future, but no new releases have come out since mid-January (for many reasons I'm sure). So head over to the PVP Alive page, watch and laugh. The toons show how a still artist can easily use Flash to jump into motion and sound. Of course thework isn't at the same level as Homestarrunner.com, but it is a good start.Hopefully some Flasher traffic will incourage Kurtz to pump out some new animations.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

What Rocky could do in 30 seconds

No this isn't a boxing post, just a heads up to an animated short about a movie. Angry Alien Productions hasbeen making 30 second versions of classic movies for quite a while. In July of last year they started premieringon the Starz network and then online. Their latest Brokebackparody is really hard to quick so I've decided to just pass on a link to the Rocky story as portrayed by bunnies in30 seconds. Why watch a two hour epic when you can just jump into Flash?

His latest project dives into thenewly modified Flash 8 Camera object to create a fully interactive video game that is a knockoff of the pre-crimesystem from Minority Report the movie (read the short story, its darker). The project grabs hand movements from theuser's camera to define how to turn a cube on the stage and even has a new option to add the user's photo (via thecamera) to the face of the cube. David Utter of WebProNews is quoting Adobeas saying that Flash is gaining market share faster than Microsoft's Windows Media Player for online content, accordingto an AccuStream iMedia study.SWF has already passed Quicktime and Real to become the second best way to display streaming media. Now if variouscompanies (Viacom's MTV and Comedy Central) would just realize that distributing their content via Flash would allowfor easier creation of interactive fun for their viewers and even makes a better way to wrap advertising content aroundand within regular content... I really hate waiting for a video ad to pas in the middle of my video, but wouldn't mindhaving the ad wrapped around the content, much like a regular web page. What do you think, will content companies wakeup or will they continue to distribute their content to a limited audience defined by one operating system rather thatby an (almost) universal browser plugin?

update: Of course if you look at Macromedia's Flash Pro and video page, you'll see that Flash isalready able to be seen by more users than WMP.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chevy Apprentice: More Video Editing on the Web

Filed under: Innovation, Ideas, Ad Design, Rich Internet Applications, Video, Flash Platform, Flash Video, Links
Following off of my post yesterday about Jumpcut, I'll throw this one out there too. Check out his article, "Migrating Flash Projects toVideo" on the Flash Dev Center site. Hehas some great tips on taking your Flash movies to DVD and broadcast TV. I especially like the nod to Flashants' SWF2Video. A couple of years ago, Ihad to reanimate pieces in AfterEffects for DVD menu backgrounds that I'd mocked up using coded animation in Flashbecause I couldn't figure out how to output the dynamic Flash movie to video. More recently, I've seen GeoVid's Flash to Video Encoder at work andbeen pleased with it, but I'm definitely going to check out SWF2Video now too!

Check out Chris' sites to seehis work: Mudbubble and KeyFramer

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hillman Curtis Interview you may want to listen to

Filed under: Innovation, Ideas, Tips and Tricks, Art, Video, Samples

Back in art school, one of my first Digital Mediaclasses (they teach art using digital media as you medium, yay weird web art) required me to buy a certain Flash5 book by a Mr. Hillman Curtis. Unfortunately the book was extremely useful as an art reference, but next to uselessas a Flash reference. They are using the now popular Microsoft video DRM formatthat has taken hold of other services like Vongo, Comedy Central and VH1. Unfortunately this means they are going tomake it harder for their users and in turn the viewing public to see their content. Use of Micorsoft video(specifically WMP10 based video) cuts out all non-Windows, non-IE users. Why not follow the better trend in web video? Why not call up Adobe and see about hooking into one of the better ways to serve up streaming video, Flash. Sure youcould choose, Real or Quicktime video, but Flash video can be edited to include custom look and feel that doesn'tchange based on Operating System or Web browser. But this would require opening up to a new standard and would meanconforming to your user rather than forcing the user to conform to you... Personally I see this as useless. Considerthe fact that AP video is currently displayed by the Washington Post within a Flash-basedplayer.

via Romenesko

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Flash on X-Box 360

Filed under: Innovation, Ideas, Tips and Tricks, Tutorials, Games, Video, Links

Our big blog brother, Engadget posted a greattutorial this morning showing you exactly how to run Flash (and therefore Flash-based-games) on you very own X-Box 360.Head on over for the full tutorial. Unfortunately the Dashboard upgrade released today by Microsoft will break thishack, but if you want to wait on the update try it out. I wonder if you could use this for basic FLV files too? If so,this would be a cool way to stream Google video (via the online player, not the purchased kind) or YouTube video toyour X-Box 360 for HD viewing. Enjoy.

Leo Burnett is an artsy web and graphic design firm whose web site is centered in a 3Dinterface based on the 'Leo Burnett' signature. Its hard to tell if the namesake is an actual person, but either waythe personallity he represents is successfully used to express the business objective of the firm via interactivequotes and even the mouse. The user's pointer is optionally replaced with a large black pencil that shows "big ideascome out of big pencils." I was almost unable to stop wondering through the site checking out interesting CanadianAdwork/Artwork. Check out the Visa commercials for an indie style video portfolio. Also try to stop drawing with thehuge pencil. Then take your new inspiration to start up you own portfolio.

Thanks David Chartier

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

PlayDoJam puts you in the game, LITERALLY!

Filed under: Innovation, Games, Video, Samples, Links, Flash 8

Stopfor a second and take a look at the image in this post. What you see is a backetball hoop and a nice, yet simple, 3Danimation of a simple looking basket ball game... but it doesn't stop there. In the bottom right of the screen is aperson. Slapping the ball. Literally. Yes this is the first (I think) major web Flash-based game centered on true humaninteraction via web cam. PlayDoCam creator Andreas Rehnberg, which wespoke of back in August, has taken his earlier idea to a new level and combined some Shockwave/Director ideas withFlash 8 to create a very cool looking new basketball game in Flash. The game tracks the users hands and works like pongto bounce a small ball into one of two hoops while avoiding absticles and trying to hit points on the way. All I can sayis very cool, and can't wait for the full version to come out next month. Head over to the official PlayDoJam site to watch the preview and drool.

Thanks to tipster KarlCifius

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

SWF vs WMV vs M4V

Filed under: Macromedia, Innovation, Merger, Releases, Ideas, Video, Web Standards, Flash MX2004, Flash Video, Flash 8

OnMonday Adobe grabbed a DRM company that creates lock downs for PDF files via a client-server method and documentencryption. This seems old hat in the textbook and business documentation world, but I wonder if Adobe will use thismethod to create a new SWF based DRM. For more clues I sat at work listening to the Gillmor Gang discuss DRM and video. They brought up the new Google Video store and how Google is using Flash (7 if you must know) todisplay its videos. One member of the gang (I forget his name) said (aroung the 18 minute mark) that Adobe andMacromedia's merger should bring DRM to Flash in the future so Flash can become a more viable content distributionmodel. I'm all for it... er let me clarify, I'd prefer DRM free content for ease of use etc, but if it must be there Iwant cross platform content, like Flash. In order words, that new VH1 video site and the new Comedy Central videoservice are closed to my iBook due to lack of vision on the part of their developers (and the music industry, butthat's another story), but if the content was Flash based (like CNN's free in pagevideo) then the content would be semi cross platform (sorry Linux, wait for 8.5). The only question is: Is SWF (and On2by association) better than WMV and M4V?

image from video for Flash

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

MacrAdobe: Pull out the crystal ball and tell me the future

Filed under: Macromedia, Innovation, Merger, Video, Flash Platform, Flash Paper, Flash 8

What does the future hold? Well Group Manager for Adobe's Developer Relations Team, Ben Watson is blogging with his personal crystal ball (and probably an internal memo describing the product map). He says Flex and Cold Fusion are getting some LiveCycle injections and he has even seen a Flash application mixed with Acrobat (like FlashPaper on steroids, I'm sure).

TUAW has the scoop including a list of his predictions. I just wonder what cool new apps they haven't thought up yet. Why not release a Flash AfterEffects hybrid that uses Flash as the GUI to create a video effects program that simpler than iMovie yet cooler than anything on the market.
