3. Manetas' site is surely very close to the Stamen site (though with more than one color). His site gives attribution to the project as follows:

"jacksonpollock.org , created by Miltos Manetas in Oct 2003, credits: Mai Ueda (suggestion), Rafael Rozendaal (suggestion). Original file by Mike Migurski from Stamen re-elaborated by Iashido ."

The short version is that Manetas's site isn't "very close" to Stamen's- he actually just took the SWF file itself and posted it as jacksonpollack.org, and then later asked Eric for the source file (rather than create something new and creative himself). His response to Eric's "isn't that kind of lame?" protest was:

"Please, try to understand the way we work at Neen: we consider all visual/audio material as everybody's property. It's more cool like that."

6. Kathryn, thanks for the links and the explanation. I still think its interesting how old this is and yet its bubbled up again now (search Technorati for "Jackson Pollock" to see how many blogs posted about this in the last few days...and not about the authorship controversey). For that reason Invers, I think I'll leave this post here so that there's a record of it all.

Mary, while I am no lawyer, it is my understanding that anything you upload to a public server (publish to the web), is covered by copyright laws (at least in the U.S.) whether it has a copyright notice or not...UNLESS specifically noted otherwise (as in the case of works licensed under the Creative Commons).

9. Steering away from legals and sticking to the subject of art, why not make a pollock-esque picture at http://www.theonemillionmasterpiece.com. Uses the same kind of flash paint app, but let's you join up your work with loads of other people and view it through a Google style AJAX viewer. Oh, and it is for charridee :)
