Is there something wrong with the Flash Player EULA?

Slashdot seems to think so, but you know what a forum of tech geeks will get... let's see what the experts have to say:

AlterSlash has the full conversation for digestion

TurdHead says you should go grab the OSFlash player to avoid any EULA problems

John Dowdell hasn't had a chance to respond, but you know he will, instead he wrote up the current Slashdot discussion of the merger

I say, this is not an unexpected thing, just look at the Google toolbar EULA or the Window Media Player one. You are using free software and this is part of the trade off... What do you think?

2. i think it is clear, that macromedia is making a case for its other players. ie pocket pc, palm, flash lite. leave it to creative folks with time on their hands and they would take the free flash player and port it to who knows what, but macromedia is just making it clear that they want their free desktop/laptop...full os version of flash player to stay where they want it and can support it. while other versions are for other systems.

this kind of goes back to the whole discussion of flash player for the PSP. I would love flash on more stuff but have to respect macromedia's wishes to make a player that is used in a particular way.

3. What's kind of obnoxious with the Slashdot crowd is that anyone who tries to make money off of software is "selfish", especially if it's closed source. Macromedia doesn't *have* to give us the flash player for free! They spend a heck of a lot of time and money making it and it's been an amazing contribution to the web, and /. should realize that Macromedia is a proprietary company that brings something to the table that actually makes capitalism great for the consumer - COMPETITION, as in with people like Microsoft. If it wasn't for Macromedia, what sort of worthless media player would have shakily spawned in the Flash Player's void?
